Supplements can be a great help, but I would never take them without checking with my doctor and home health care service. Without medical advice, taking herbs and other nutritional supplements is risky, if not dangerous. Periodic blood tests are important to track their effect.
My personal nutritional supplement list is: Sam-E, Co-Enzyme Q-10, Di-Ribose, Super B-complex, Senior Daily Vitamin, flaxseed oil, fish oil capsules, calcium chews (can’t tolerate the tablets.). My tummy now demands pampering.
My sources of information are Vitamin Research, Nature Made and WebMD.
My medications are simple. I take Premarin (my choice after doctor explained the pros and cons), Medroxyprogesterone. For asthma symptoms: Actonel, Nasonex, Asmanex and Singulair. As sleeping pill, Singulair can’t be beat and it is an excellent asthma treatment. I also take the aerosol Xopenex, but Medi-Cal/Medicare (known in California as Medi-Medi insurance) just stopped paying for that medication, so I’ll be scrambling a bit to find a solution.
Tummy problems are best solved with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Metamucil helps soothe the stomach and sometimes is all you need to solve the problem. I find taking two fish oil capsules helps my tummy, but others have problems with two capsules, finding one capsule a day works better for them. For some, even one is too much.
Approach supplements with caution. Add only one at time to your daily regimen, so if you experience a bad reaction you can pinpoint what caused it.
It appears SCI increases need for some vitamins, especially C and the Bs.
